Blue Hills: The Story Behind an Original Painting by Richard Minnitt

There are some landscapes that make you stop and look.

Blue Hills, an original acrylic painting by South African artist Richard Minnitt, is one of those paintings. With its sweeping grassland, distant blue hills, changing sky and winding stream, it captures the quiet beauty of the South African landscape.

It’s a painting that feels both peaceful and familiar — the kind of scene that can bring back memories of travelling through the countryside or simply enjoying the beauty of the land around us.

Meet the Artist

Richard Minnitt is a geologist and retired professor from the School of Mining Engineering at Wits University. He retired from the university in 2017 after a long academic career.

Richard began painting in earnest after his retirement, developing his passion for capturing landscapes through acrylic painting.

His background as a geologist gives him a particularly interesting connection with the natural world. A career spent studying the earth and its formations has given him an appreciation for the structure, texture and changing character of the landscape.

Today, his paintings reflect that appreciation, bringing together his observations of the natural environment with his own artistic interpretation.

About Blue Hills

Painted in acrylic, Blue Hills measures 40 × 60 cm.

The painting draws you into the landscape through the winding stream, which leads the eye towards the hills in the distance. The warm tones of the grassland contrast beautifully with the cooler blues of the hills and sky.

There is a wonderful sense of space in the painting.

You can almost imagine standing in that landscape, looking across the open grassland towards the hills beyond.

And perhaps that’s what makes original art so special. It doesn’t have to tell you exactly what to see. It gives you a starting point and allows you to bring your own memories, experiences and imagination to the scene.

The Beauty of Original Art

When you choose an original painting, you’re choosing something that is unique.

There is only one Blue Hills. The brushwork, texture and small details belong to that particular painting and cannot be exactly reproduced in another piece.

For many people, that is part of the attraction of owning original art. You’re not simply buying something to put on a wall — you’re bringing a piece of an artist’s creativity into your home.

And over time, the artwork can become part of your own story too.

Choosing the Right Frame

A beautiful original painting deserves a frame that complements it.

With a landscape such as Blue Hills, the frame can help bring together the natural colours in the artwork while allowing the painting itself to remain the focus.

At Decor and Framing Studio, we believe framing is about more than simply putting a frame around a picture. It’s about finding the right combination of artwork, frame and setting so that everything works together.

The right frame can also help an original artwork feel at home within your existing decor.
